Three years on: The difference you’re making for families in Sudan

With your support, classrooms are reopening in Sudan’s White Nile State, helping children return to school.

Three years since conflict began in Sudan, millions of people are still facing violence, hunger and uncertainty.

Today, Sudan remains one of the world’s largest displacement crises, with 14 million people displaced since the war began in April 2023.

Amid this ongoing crisis, the support of New Zealanders like you is making a meaningful difference. Your gift is providing life-saving aid, including shelter, clean water and healthcare. It is also helping children continue their education and hold onto their dreams for the future.

A school reopens in Al Jabalain

In Al Jabalain, a small village in White Nile State, stability has begun to return.

Just months ago, the local school stood empty. Today, classrooms have been repaired, and students are back at their desks, learning once again.

School girls attend lessons at a secondary school in White Nile State, Sudan.

“Reopening the school was like a gift, for us teachers and the children,” says headteacher Susan Zein Faisal Allah Al-Kamali. “Despite the many challenges, we found the strength to start again.”

The school now brings together children from different backgrounds, including refugees from South Sudan, internally displaced Sudanese families and members of the local community, learning side by side.

Omnia’s story: Rebuilding her future through education

Among the students is 17-year-old Omnia.

She was forced to flee her home in Khartoum when conflict escalated and had been unable to attend school since 2023.

Returning to the classroom has changed everything.

“When I heard school was starting again, it felt like life was starting again,” says Omnia.

Before the war, Omnia was at the top of her class. Now, she is determined to continue her studies, achieve high marks and pursue her dream of becoming a surgeon.

“Even during displacement, education can help us build skills, adapt and engage with people – it helps us grow stronger.”

With support from donors like you, UNHCR and partners are repairing schools, providing learning materials, and creating safe spaces where children can learn and imagine a brighter future.

From her classroom in Al Jabalain, Omnia is already looking ahead.

“Before the war, Sudan was an amazing country. We can help rebuild it and make it a role model. I hope Sudan will be at peace and even better than before.”

How your support is helping people in Sudan

Omnia’s story is one example of what you make possible with your generosity.

Across Sudan and neighbouring countries, you're providing life-saving assistance to those who need it most, including:

  • Shelter for refugees who’ve lost their homes and all their possessions
  • Emergency cash so mothers can buy food for hungry children
  • Safe spaces for women and girls who’ve experienced horrific violence.

The road ahead for families in Sudan

For families across Sudan, the impact of conflict is still part of everyday life. Violence continues to uproot communities and tear lives apart.

But moments like a classroom reopening or a child returning to school offer hope.

Your generosity is helping make these moments happen. It is helping families find safety, helping children return to school and helping communities take small steps forward.

If you’d like to help more families find safety and rebuild their lives, please donate today.
