Sudan Emergency

Your donation can help the people of Sudan survive conflict, starvation and disease after two years of war.

“I hope we'll have enough food for the children, they are suffering a lot.”

Suraya, 22, forced to flee Sudan

After two years of devastating war in Sudan, millions of women, children and displaced families are suffering violence, food insecurity and the collapse of essential services.

Since the war began in April 2023, nearly 13 million people have been forced to flee their homes, either within Sudan or to neighbouring countries. It is now the world’s largest displacement and protection crisis.

Violence continues, with attacks on displacement camps putting vulnerable families at even greater risk. Many have lost everything and are struggling to survive without shelter, food or safety.

Famine has been confirmed in at least 10 locations in Sudan.  Elsewhere, malnutrition is rampant and medical supplies are scarce.

As Sudan’s crisis deepens, humanitarian funding is under threat. Aid organisations including UNHCR are facing dire funding shortages, putting millions of refugees at risk of losing the life-saving support they desperately need.

UNHCR teams are on the ground right now, delivering vital aid wherever possible. But the people of Sudan urgently need more help. Your gift can provide safe shelter, medicine, cash to buy food, and other essentials.

Please don't wait – your donation can help save lives.

About Sudan Emergency

What is happening in Sudan?

More than 13 million people have been forced to flee since fighting broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in April 2023.

Since then, homes, schools and hospitals have come under attack, amid extensive looting and burning. The health system is rapidly deteriorating. Clinics are struggling to cope with a life-threatening shortage of staff and supplies. Famine has been confirmed in 10 locations, with more areas at risk.

The number of unaccompanied or separated children is also rising – and with it, the risk of being recruited into the conflict, or falling prey to forced labour or human trafficking.

While most people are displaced inside Sudan, over three million have escaped as refugees to neighbouring countries such as South Sudan and Chad. They are arriving at border crossings with little more than the clothes on their backs, and urgently need safety and protection.

What is UNHCR doing to help?

UNHCR is providing shelter, emergency supplies, clean water, targeted support to address malnutrition and healthcare in Sudan and in neighbouring countries hosting refugees. Our teams are also distributing emergency cash so that vulnerable families can purchase basic needs including food and medicine. We are also working quickly to relocate refugees to safer areas away from borders, and to register families for legal and protection support.

What difference will my donation make?

Your donation can provide emergency relief items such as sleeping mats, blankets, soap, mosquito nets and water jerry cans for families forced to flee. Your gift can also help UNHCR provide health consultations, vaccinations and medical supplies in displacement camps and distribute emergency cash so families can buy food, medicine and other essentials.

How is aid getting into the country? Is it reaching the people who need it?

UNHCR is striving to reach extremely vulnerable communities with aid. However, funding cuts are already affecting emergency assistance on the ground. Without further funding, more essential services will shut down, leaving people without access to the most basic forms of support.

Our fundraising impact
